Dumb Charades
To teach that God gives everyone gifts and abilities, not to arrogantly boast about them but to serve others.
Objective: To teach that God gives everyone gifts and abilities, not to arrogantly boast about them but to serve others.
You will need: Paper chits with a Bible character written on each chit.
How to play: Divide the kids into groups. Select a volunteer from each group. The volunteer should pick out one chit and act out the character found in the chit to his/her teammates. Set a timer. The team that finds their character in least time is the winner.
Explanation: Begin by asking a few questions like,
- What happens to our ability to communicate when we don’t have the use of our mouths?
- Which is more valuable: the use of our eyes, the use of our ears or the use of our mouths?
- Imagine that our hands, mouth and ears could talk to each other. What might they say to each other if they were becoming overly proud of their role in the body?
You may continue by saying, “We need all the parts of our body to function well. Basic life tasks become very difficult when we don’t have the use of our eyes to guide our hands. If we cannot use our voice, it is challenging to communicate. Likewise, we are the body of Christ and each of us play an important part in keeping the body healthy and functioning, revealing Jesus to the world. God gives everyone gifts and abilities so we can use them to serve Him and others. God has created us each to be different and we can help to support the church, care for each other, and share the love of God in heaps of different ways.”
“Imagine if everyone in our church was exactly like you: what would be really good and what would be really bad? What would get done lots and what would never get done? Just like a body needs all its parts, the whole ‘body’ of our church(Christ) needs all of its different people. If we begin to think our gifts are more valuable than the gifts God has given to others, our pride can get in the way of the “body of Christ” functioning as it should. If we are tempted to be proud of a gift God has given us, we can remember the instructions written in Romans 12:9-11 that tell us to use our gifts to serve God and to show our love for each other by honoring one another above ourselves.”
